Truck Traffic and Traffic Oval Feedback

"We live on west 14th street and have been in this home since 2013. We moved to our friendly DTF neighborhood from north market street, where we were quite used to the noise of cars and emergency vehicles and speed of travel up and down north market.

Within the first week we moved to our home, we were shocked at cars flying up and down west 14th, not stopping as the careened onto market and discouraged when we approached the city about cars flying over the joke of a speed bump in front of our home, purposefully riding our non-existent curb just to avoid the speed bump and using 14th as an exit ramp /cut through to east street. Some of the worst standstill traffic and dangerous, obstructive parking/turning and idling for an hour every afternoon on Neidig and 14th, takes place daily, during the school year. We’ve asked for a traffic study in an effort to get a cross walk or at least a 3 way stop sign at our intersection. We had to pretty much beg the city to come out and re-paint the fire lane areas which, they did, partially and reluctantly. We’ve spoken with city police, we used to attend NAC meetings regularly, we spoken with city officials and city planning and have suggested a speed sign that lets people know how fast are going. We suggested a speed camera and even offered our parking area Neidig, so an officer could position themselves there. We’ve had to call out police multiple times over several years for dangerous traffic situations and have watched kids crossing to and from school, almost get hit more times than we want to count. we have seen cars slammed on W. 14th St., and our friends experienced three such incidences of hit and runs. It’s so dangerous to park on W. 14th St. that nobody that lives on the street actually does it unless they have an extra car and can’t fit it into their driveway and all the parking on Neidig is already taken….

All of that being said, we’ve also observed plenty of accidents at 13th, Frederick and Motter. We believe something needs to be done to make that intersection safer. We’ve considered one way roads up and down our neighborhood and mentioned the idea to the city. We suggested weight (ton) limits to be enforced because during construction of the East Street multi-dwelling complex and even now, with ongoing development around the banner school and down 16th street…A construction van driver (last year) was texting and rode up the non existent curb and into our yard and flattened the speed limit sign…and then backed up and drive off to his job site. The cops told us to see if his van could be located at the North of Market development."
