Hello Shraddha,
Wow, thank you for contacting me so quickly. It actually amazes me how quickly you wrote to me, considering I have been trying to get through to the city about the traffic problems on 13th street for years now.
Forthcoming and transparent communication is your responsibility; it keeps the town informed. Any mixed messages fall to your office’s shortcomings. I've heard from two separate accounts that the city had outright refused to mail or post flyers to the neighborhood about this roundabout proposal. Why should I have to clarify, when your transparency and disclosure to the residents is minimal at best!? Also, I find it very interesting that in your interview with the Frederick News Post released today, you did not mention this "emergency dead tree issue." In fact, you said, and I quote, "...There are 100-year-old trees that also obstruct sight distance.” That seems pretty related to the traffic intersection and the circle issue to me.
You also said, "The proposed roundabout would control the direction of traffic and ensure that vehicles travel at 15 to 20 miles per hour." The "direction" of traffic would be straight up and down 13th street- the angle of that oval turns our street into an on ramp for RT. 15 for the tractor trailers moving from distribution centers on Gas House Pike, not to mention the Clemson Corner Walmart/ Wegmans area.
The speed of traffic is not the problem (those speed bumps sure don't even help that). It's the sheer volume of traffic and the tractor trailers coming down this street, which the city will do absolutely nothing about. I’ve pursued this before only to be told that the issue of ticketing trucks in a no truck zone is actually is "un-enforceable" . Why doesn’t the city change the code and be able to ticket. Here's another idea: keep a small traffic circle, and make every other street one way. This was proposed in the seventies to help this neighborhood- imagine how much worse it has gotten since!! Or, install overhead brackets that trucks literally could not fit under (similar to a parking garage entrance). Or, keep the oval shape, but turn it to align with Motter Avenue- that would make it harder for trucks to maneuver.
It seems to us that you are trying to turn our neighborhood into a traffic highway; quietly, under the radar, and we are NOT ok with it.
The accidents on our street are so often and terrible, that I don't even use 13th street anymore. Most people who live here know to avoid that intersection. Once, we had a fundraiser at our house to benefit the Downtown Frederick Partnership. Everyone parked in the public parking along the curb on 13th street- both sides. FOUR cars were totaled- including Kara Norman's (director of the DFP). Thank
goodness former Chief of Police Kim Dine was in attendance, and could help with the accident and traffic during the incident. The cars were only parked out there for the afternoon; however, we have never parked out there since. Again- the accidents are not even the main concern, it is the sheer volume which your skewed oval will only encourage.
"Frederick residents have pushed for more safety provisions in the intersection for 10 years." The no-truck signs were requested 30 YEARS ago. That resident didn't like how the traffic created cracks in his old plaster. Our windows actually shake when 18 wheelers and large dump trucks go by.
I have been trying for many years to get the truck traffic off our street, my neighbor on 12th has been trying for 20 years. This is a problem that the city will not fix to help the residents. The city seems to only want to cater to big business.
“We have received ... pretty close to 100% positive comments about it,” could not be further from the truth. I have actual proof of submittal from fellow residents stating otherwise. Where do you get your numbers?
Your very concerned voters and longtime residents.
